Fall travel may no longer be the hidden bargain it once was, but the season still brings notable advantages — from lower airfares and hotel rates to less-crowded destinations.

“Travel demand remains strong this fall, even though many expected economic uncertainty to hold people back,” Melanie Fish, travel expert at Expedia Group, told Yahoo Finance. “Instead, more travelers are recognizing fall as the ideal window when prices drop, crowds thin out, and the weather stays pleasant.”

Travel platforms like Expedia, Hopper, KAYAK, and Road Scholar are all reporting a jump in searches for fall getaways compared to last year.

Still, the season remains rich with savings.

“With summer behind us, fall’s shoulder season is when the best travel bargains emerge,” Kate Williams, KAYAK’s chief communications officer, told Yahoo Finance. “This year, we’re seeing broad price drops — from international and domestic flights to hotels and rental cars. It’s the ideal moment to enjoy a trip without peak-season crowds or inflated costs.”

That’s reassuring, especially after airfares rose 5.9% in August following a 4% increase in July.

Compared with peak summer rates, international round‑trip flights are now 33% lower, according to KAYAK data. Domestic flights in the U.S. have dropped by 21%, rental cars are 19% more affordable, and international hotel prices have fallen by as much as 10%.

Sandy Altamirano, a AAA travel advisor, noted, “When people see certain discounts—especially on flights—it completely shifts their mindset from ‘I can't afford to go there’ to ‘Hold on… I actually can, and it won’t be overcrowded.’”

Where to find the deals

According to Fish, the top international destinations offering fall deals include Tokyo, Cancun, Paris, Rome, and London. Europe stands out for U.S. travelers, with airfare dropping by over a third compared to summer, and Spain leading the pack, according to KAYAK.

Sandy Altamirano, a AAA travel advisor, explained, “Seeing certain discounts—especially on flights—can completely change people’s perspective, turning ‘I can’t afford to go there’ into ‘Wait… I actually can, and it won’t be packed.’”

As for where to find the best deals, Fish highlighted top international destinations for fall savings, including Tokyo, Cancun, Paris, Rome, and London. Europe is particularly appealing to U.S. travelers, with airfare down more than a third compared to the summer, led by Spain, according to KAYAK.

Domestic travelers can score deals in cities like Las Vegas, Orlando, and Miami. Although New York City has long been a top fall destination, hotel rates there are remaining at peak-season levels, Fish noted.

Additionally, travelers can consider Seattle, Oakland, Jackson (Wyo.), and Hilo, Hawaii, where airfare is about 30% cheaper compared to the summer months, according to KAYAK data.
